Fishing, which almost ceased to exist, is now being rejuvenated with foreign aid. New oil and gas fields off the shore of Cabinda (an enclave in the north of the country) are being developed. However, Angola has only one refinery and so exports most of its oil in the crude form. The only other industry of any size is diamond mining.

William Egan Colby (January 4, 1920 April 27, 1996) spent a career in intelligence for the United States, culminating in holding the post of Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) from September, 1973, to January, 1976. During World War II Colby served with the Office of Strategic Services. After the war he joined the newly created CIA. Before and during the Vietnam War, Colby served as Chief of Station in Saigon, Chief of CIA's Far East Division, and head of the Civil Operations and Rural Development effort; he was responsible for the Phoenix Program. Over a third live in the capital Luanda. After a protracted and brutal war, Angola won independence from Portugal in 1975. Since then the country has been torn apart by almost continuous civil war - 27 years of it. In April 2002 the warring sides finally signed peace accords, and Angolans could at last look forward to rebuilding their country in peace. But they still face enormous problems. Angola is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, where according to UN figures, 82% of people live on less than a dollar a day. And yet its a country with enormous oil wealth, whose government earns more than five billion dollars a year in oil revenues.

A bus carrying the Togo national football team, including the Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor, was attacked by gunmen as it travelled to the Africa Cup of Nations football tournament in Angola yesterday. The driver was killed and two players were among nine injured in the ambush, which a separatist rebel group claimed to have carried out. The attack, two days before the start of the tournament, last night cast a shadow over Africas most-followed sporting event, from which Togo may now withdraw. Attackers raked the bus with machinegun fire as it crossed into Cabinda, a disputed oil-rich Angolan territory within the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo. Adebayor said last night that Togo could leave the tournament, telling the BBC: If the security is not sure then we will be leaving tomorrow. I dont think they will be ready to give their life. A team-mate, Thomas Dossevi, named the injured players as Kodjovi Obilale, reserve goalkeeper from the French amateur side GSI Pontivy, and Serge Akakpo, a defender from the Romanian team Vaslui. We had just crossed the border five minutes before — we were surrounded by police buses, one in front of us another behind, he said. This video shows a declaration of a togoloian football player who spoke to a french radio station, about the suprising machine-gun attack in Angola this Friday, two days before the beginning of the african cup of nations.Two players are reported to be injured and a Togolese sports ministry spokesman in Lome said that the bus driver had been killed in the attack. The Sparrow Hawks are in the country ahead of the African tournament, which gets under way on Sunday.
